David Heber Plank was born in Caernarvon Township, Berks County, Pa. on Nov. 12, 1842. He attended local and state schools including Millersville Normal School and Pennsylvania State College. He attended Millersville Normal School from 1860 to 1864 but did not graduate. While at Pennsylvania State College, he selected medicine as his profession and applied to the University of Pennsylvania. He was accepted and graduated on Mar. 14, 1867 with a degree in medicine.
